Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci was Florentine artist, and one of the greatest maters of the High Renaissance, celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His overwhelming love of knowledge and research was the essential of both his artist and scientific accomplishments.

Leonardo was born in the small town of Vinci, in Tuscany, near Florence. He was the son of a wealthy Florentine notary and a peasant woman. In the mid 1460?s Leonardo and his family settled in Florentine, where Leonardo was given the opportunity to have to best education that Florentine could offer for major scholar and artist interest of Italy.

In about 1466 Leonardo was apprenticed as a studio boy to Andrea Del Verrocchio, who was the leading Florentine painter and sculptor of his day. In Verrocchio?s workshop Leonardo was introduced to many activities, as to the painting of altarpieces and panel pictures to the creation of large sculptural projects in marble and bronze. After working six years for Virrocchio in his shop, Leonardo in 1472 entered in the painter guild of Florence, but in 1476 he was still considered Verrocchio?s assistant.

Leonardo became an independent master in 1478. His first assignment, was to paint an altarpiece for the chapel of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Florentine town hall, was never completed.

His first large painting, The Adoration of the Magi was ordered in 1481 for the Augustinians monastery of San Donato at Scopeto, just outside of Florence, marks a significant moment of innovation in the tradition...
